The Man Who Changed Everything In One Day

Rolando Mendoza – The guy who made the whole world got glued on front of their television last August 23, 2010.

8:45 PM

I did a brisk walking on my way home expecting to see the telenovelas I have been watching these days-yeah, I’m an avid viewer of Agua Bendita, Magkaribal and Kristine. The moment I entered our home, I saw an image of a bus in the middle of the street that was surrounded by armed people. I asked my mom, “Ano yan? Bakit yan ang palabas?!” and then I realized that our country was facing another crisis-hostage taking in Manila, Philippines.

It saddens me more that the people who were in the bus was a tourist from Hong Kong. This incident will make a huge damage on our Tourism part of our country and of course, the alliance between Hong Kong and Philippines will be broken-no more shopping haven and Disneyland. :(

I remembered the movie of John Travolta, The Taking of Pelham 123-the way how he took the control over the train and put innocent lives in danger.

Did Rolando Mendoza get that idea from that movie?

Some say, he was a good man. He received numerous awards and recognition-yet, why he decided to commit such crime?

Since I was really dead tired from training, I decided to hit the sack around 10:30 PM.

Next day at the office, we talked about the incident that happened in Manila. All of us were disappointed the way how it was handled by our SWAT team. Even our trainer, gave a feedback and a comparison how the Americans handles hostage taking issue in their country.

Should we blame the media for making things more complicated?

I guess, things would be better if the people who were responsible should have decided a news black out over the issue. This would curb shedding blood of innocent lives and our standing of our country wouldn’t be at risk.

Poor leadership + Less equipment + No budget + Media = Failed Resolution.

As far as I know there are MPD SWAT that specializes such kind of situation. They are more trained and knowledgeable about dealing with hostage takers.

MPD higher officials has the MAJOR MAJOR mistake on this. They have not done there part well. They’ve let unprepared policeman to go face the battle without even bringing basic life survival stuff (gas mask, cable wire, ladder etc)

This is such a big disgrace on the MPD police. I don’t know what trainings those Generals have. It’s a shame on all of them.

@ryxrose: SO TRUE! Maybe if they didn’t allow the media to cover what’s really going on, that might change the situation. If the hostage taker didn’t see it on tv, the negotiator might have handled the situation and they could have saved lives.

I feel really bad for the policeman who went unprepared. They’re only doing their job-in a wrong way.

I do agree with you that what had happened last week is a big disgrace. I hope they will learn from this one.
